Join the Team

How much prior experience or training do I need to volunteer?

No previous experience or training is necessary to become a Flemington – Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad volunteer. Our organization counts on men and women of all ages and backgrounds to join together and respond to emergencies. In most cases, these individuals didn’t have any medical training before joining our team but have since received free training in order to handle all sorts of emergencies.

What kind of training do you offer and what areas of rescue do you engage in?

Ambulance crews must complete training as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and are required to be certified in professional cardiopulmonary resuscitation for Healthcare Providers.  In addition, members are trained in the latest techniques for medical emergencies under the supervision of the Squad’s medical director. Specialized teams also provide technical rescues.

Are there other benefits to volunteering?

In addition to the satisfaction and pride that comes from helping others, FRFARS volunteers learn emergency response and leadership skills that for some can lead to public safety careers. Many also find volunteering fulfills a civic desire to be more involved in our community. Being an ambulance and rescue squad volunteer is challenging, exciting, and rewarding.

Can I volunteer without assisting in medical or rescue emergencies?

Yes! If 9-1-1 emergency response is not for you, we have needs for people with skills in the areas of accounting, recruiting, business management, event planning, design, education, and more. See the “Supportive Member” section below.

I’m not 18 yet. How can I help?

Many of our current members began their volunteer careers as junior members, which can be between the ages of 16-18. Junior members are trained in CPR and first aid, and act as responders with our ambulance crews. They can then work towards going to get their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.

I’m ready to join! What types of volunteer roles can I apply for?

We have several categories of membership for aspiring volunteers:

  • Standard Member — Volunteers aged 18+ whose primary function is to train for and provide 911 EMS responses to accidents, injuries, and other emergencies. All skill levels are welcome. Standard Members will be given a training program to build their skills which includes hands-on experience, agency-specific procedures, EMT school, and skill refinement. All standard members work towards being a fully trained EMT comfortable with our agency procedures.

  • Junior Member — Like the Standard Member, the junior member trains for and assists with 911 responses with the goal of becoming an EMT. This role is for individuals age 16-17 and provides an opportunity for EMT training and skill practice early. Upon turning 18, Junior Members become Standard Members.

  • Associate Member — Active EMTs or Firefighters with other agencies who receive their training and continuing education through these agencies. Associate Members provide 9-1-1 emergency response and have reduced requirements and privileges when compared to Standard Members. Associate Members must be fully trained and experienced prior to joining our Squad.

  • Supportive Member — Volunteers who help with any and all Squad activities outside of providing 9-1-1 emergency responses. Some examples include administrative tasks, fundraising, PR/outreach, photography, newsletter writing, event scheduling, IT expertise, or building/equipment maintenance. We welcome those with specialized interests and skills to reach out or apply. Supportive Members are not involved in 911 emergency responses and do not receive emergency services training.
