On Sunday December 13, 2009 starting around 930am the temperature in and around Hunterdon County suddenly dropped causing already wet roads to turn to ice. Throughout the County especially in the higher elevations 9-1-1 calls for assistance starting pouring in. Within a two hour timeframe the Flemington – Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad was summoned to ten different calls for assistance. Due to the ice the calls were for various accidents and fall victims.
The fleet of ambulances and the heavy rescue unit was staffed by additional volunteers who carefully made their way to the station to answer every call for help.
Approximately sixteen members handled ten calls on what otherwise would have been a quiet Sunday morning. All the patients were successfully transported to Hunterdon Medical Center.
During the winter months storms produced even greater risks to our residents. The community is reminded that during the winter, rain or wet roads can be slick, when walking outside please check your footing to ensure ice is not present. When involved in a fall or accident remain calm and make sure you are in a safe location. Do Not walk on roadways as vehicles may have difficulty stopping.
Please always wear your seatbelt every time you’re in your vehicle…. Every time!
